RealPlayer

  • Free download so you can listen to live radio or to prerecorded programmes or language activities. 
  • If you have a fast network connection you can watch video clips, too, but these will be blurred if you use a 56K modem.
  • You will need a sound card in your computer.
  1. Click on the icon to go directly to the basic free player (this is all you need).... OR
  2. Cick on the text if you prefer to go to the main menu for downloads (including those with special features that you pay for)
  3. After you have filled in the form and clicked on 'download', follow the instructions until RealPlayer is downloaded and installed on your computer.
  4. After it has been installed, it will appear automatically whenever it is needed - by a language exercise activity, for example. 

 

Windows Media Player

  • Free media player from Windows so you can listen to live radio or to prerecorded programmes or language activities. 
  • If you have a fast network connection you can watch video clips, too, but these will be blurred if you use a 56K modem.
  • You will need a sound card in your computer
  • You may not need to download this - it may already be on your computer.
  1. Click on the icon or the text.
  2. Fill in your email address only if you wish to receive product information.
  3. Click on download.
  4. Follow the instructions until the Player is loaded and installed.
  5. After it has been installed, it will appear when needed by a programme that uses it.

 

Apple Mac Quicktime Player

  • Free download so you can listen to live radio or to prerecorded programmes or language activities. 
  • If you have a fast network connection you can watch video clips, too, but these will be blurred if you use a 56K modem.
  • You will need a sound card in your computer.
  • Designed originally for apple macs, but there is a download available for Windows too.
  • If you have RealPlayer and/or Windows Media Player, you will not need this too.
  1. Fill in the form.
  2. Read the notes underneath the form before clicking on download because these give helpful information.
  3. Click on download.
  4. Follow the instructions until the download and installation is complete.

 

Readplease

  • free text-to-speech download
  • ReadPlease will read any text on your screen.
  • you can insert any file or part of file
  • you can cut and paste
  • you can type directly into the box
  • You can choose which voice you want (2 males, 2 females)
  • You can change the speed of the voice 
  • Excellent tool for ESOL students unsure of pronunciation.
  1. Click on the text or icon.
  2. Read the information and listen to voice samples if you wish.
  3. Click on download (can take nearly an hour with 56K modem and slow network).
  4. After ReadPlease is downloaded and installed, you can use it whenever you wish.

 

Macromedia Flash

  • tool you need to see some interactive web programs
  • very quick to download - 2 minutes
  • some impressive programs created in Macromedia Flash e.g. ESL Radio from Monash University
  1. Read the instructions on the site
  2. Click download
  3. Follow the instructions.

 

VoyCabulary Web Tool

  • powerful free web tool to convert any text into links.
  • You can cut and paste, or type in a url to feed a whole website through the tool.
  • You can then click on any word and the tool will look up your word immediately.
  • The lookup opens in a new web browser so you can close it as soon as you've finished looking up your word.
  • It links to online dictionaries (including Websters with sound, medical and law dictionaries).
  • excellent for difficult or technical texts
  • excellent for ESOL students
  1. You do not need to download this.
  2. Click on the icon or text.
  3. Try it out.Type a url in the text box and click on process.
  4. Type some words into the text box and check it out.
  5. If you find it useful, bookmark it and use it whenever you have a text that is difficult to understand.
  6. VoyCabulary web tool can be kept on bottom toolbar
